Stock Intrinsic Value Calculator: How to Find What a Stock Is Actually Worth

The price a stock trades at and the price a stock is worth are two different things.
Market price is a fact. Intrinsic value is a calculation. The gap between them — positive or negative — is where investment opportunity lives.
This guide explains how to calculate a stock's intrinsic value, why single-formula calculators are inadequate for serious analysis, and how multi-method consensus valuation gives you a more reliable estimate.
What Is Intrinsic Value?
Intrinsic value is the present value of all future cash flows a business is expected to generate, discounted back to today.
In practice, that definition requires you to forecast a company's revenues, margins, growth rates, and reinvestment needs over 5–10 years — then discount those projections at an appropriate rate that reflects both the time value of money and the risk of being wrong.
Simple in theory. Difficult in practice.
The difficulty isn't the math. It's the assumptions. A small change in your long-term growth rate estimate can swing intrinsic value by 20–40%. That's why no single calculator is reliable on its own — they differ primarily in which assumptions they encode.
Why Single-Formula Calculators Fall Short
Most free online intrinsic value calculators use one of two methods:
DCF only — Project cash flows, pick a discount rate, apply a terminal growth rate. This is highly sensitive to inputs and produces wildly different outputs depending on assumptions.
Graham Number only —
v(22.5 — EPS — Book Value). This is fast and simple, but was designed for industrial companies in 1949. It breaks down for technology, high-growth, or asset-light businesses.
If your calculator gives you a single number with no range and no methodology disclosure, treat it with caution. The number is only as good as the assumptions behind it.
A multi-method approach is more robust. Rather than relying on one framework, you calculate intrinsic value using several independent methods and look for convergence.
The 8-Method Framework for Calculating Intrinsic Value
Here are eight established methods for estimating intrinsic value, each approaching the question from a different angle:
1. Graham Number
Formula: v(22.5 — EPS — Book Value Per Share)
What it measures: A conservative estimate of intrinsic value based on earnings and net assets.
Best for: Mature businesses with stable earnings and significant tangible assets.
Limitation: Breaks down for companies where most value is in intangibles (brand, software, intellectual property).
2. Discounted Cash Flow (DCF)
Formula: Sum of projected free cash flows for 5–10 years, discounted at WACC, plus a terminal value.
What it measures: The present value of all future cash generation.
Best for: Businesses with predictable cash flows and stable capital requirements.
Limitation: Highly sensitive to discount rate and terminal growth rate assumptions. A 1% change in either can move the output by 15–25%.
3. Earnings Power Value (EPV)
Formula: Normalised EBIT — (1 - Tax Rate) / WACC
What it measures: The value of a business assuming zero future growth — purely what it earns today, capitalised at the appropriate rate.
Best for: Cyclical businesses where you want to strip out growth speculation and focus on current earning power.
Limitation: Understates value for growth companies where current earnings understate future earning capacity.
4. P/E Relative Valuation
Method: Apply the stock's historical average P/E multiple (or sector median P/E) to normalised earnings.
What it measures: What the market has historically been willing to pay for each dollar of this company's earnings.
Best for: Established businesses with stable earnings histories.
Limitation: Anchors on historical norms, which can be wrong if the business has structurally changed.
5. Price-to-Book (P/B)
Formula: Book Value Per Share — Historical P/B Multiple
What it measures: The intrinsic value implied by the company's net assets.
Best for: Banks, insurance companies, asset-heavy industrials.
Limitation: Meaningless for software companies, asset-light businesses, or any company where most value sits in intangibles not on the balance sheet.
6. EV/EBITDA
Method: Apply sector median EV/EBITDA to the company's EBITDA to derive an implied enterprise value, then adjust for net debt.
What it measures: Operational cash generation before financing, taxes, and non-cash items.
Best for: Comparing companies across capital structures; useful for highly leveraged or capital-intensive businesses.
Limitation: EBITDA can flatter businesses with high maintenance capex that doesn't show up in depreciation.
7. Price-to-Free-Cash-Flow (P/FCF)
Method: Apply a normalised P/FCF multiple to the company's free cash flow per share.
What it measures: Intrinsic value based on actual cash generated after all capital expenditure.
Best for: Capital-light businesses with reliable FCF conversion; useful as a sanity check against P/E.
Limitation: Can be distorted by lumpy capex cycles or management decisions around working capital.
8. PEG Ratio Reverse-Engineering
Method: If the PEG ratio implies fair value at a given P/E, reverse-engineer the P/E that reflects fair compensation for the growth rate.
What it measures: Whether the current multiple is justified by the expected growth rate.
Best for: Growth companies where P/E alone overstates expensiveness.
Limitation: PEG assumes growth is linear and predictable, which is rarely true.
How to Combine Methods Into a Consensus Intrinsic Value
Running eight methods gives you eight estimates. The question is how to synthesise them.
Step 1 — Calculate all applicable methods. Not all methods apply to every business. Skip P/B for software companies. Skip EPV for early-stage growth stocks. Apply the 4–6 methods most relevant to the specific business model.
Step 2 — Weight by reliability for the business type. For a mature, asset-heavy business (utility, bank, industrial), weight Graham Number and P/B more heavily. For a high-growth technology company, weight DCF and PEG more heavily and reduce weight on asset-based methods.
Step 3 — Exclude outliers with investigation. If six methods cluster around $80–$95 and one says $130, understand why before weighting it equally. It might reveal hidden value — or it might reflect a methodology that doesn't apply to this business.
Step 4 — Calculate the weighted average. The result is a consensus intrinsic value. More robust than any single estimate, and more honest about the uncertainty involved.
Step 5 — Calculate the margin of safety. Divide the current price by the consensus intrinsic value. A stock trading at $70 with an intrinsic value of $100 has a 30% margin of safety. Most serious investors require a 15–30% margin of safety before considering a position — to account for the inevitable errors in any valuation model.

Margin of Safety (%) = 1 - (Current Price / Intrinsic Value)
Or equivalently:
Margin of Safety (%) = (Intrinsic Value - Current Price) / Intrinsic Value — 100
A 20% margin of safety means the stock would need to fall 20% further just to reach intrinsic value. A 30% margin of safety means you're paying $70 for something worth $100.
The margin of safety is the buffer that turns being a little wrong into "still fine" rather than "permanent capital loss."
