What Is a Municipal Bond?

A municipal bond is a debt security issued by a state, city, county, school district, or other government entity in the United States. When you purchase a municipal bond, you are lending money to the issuer. In return, the issuer promises to pay you a fixed rate of interest (the coupon) over the life of the bond and to return your principal at maturity.
