If the stock falls to 14,285 dollars, your equity hits exactly 30% of the current market value (4,285 divided by 14,285 equals 30%). Any further decline triggers a margin call.
At 12,000 dollars market value, your equity is only 2,000 dollars -- a 16.7% equity ratio, well below the 30% maintenance threshold. Your broker is now owed money you cannot repay from the position alone, and forced liquidation is the outcome.
What Actually Happens During a Margin Call
When your equity falls below the maintenance requirement, your broker issues a margin call -- a demand to restore your account equity above the maintenance threshold.
