Step 1: Find Current EPS or Normalized FCF Per Share

Pull trailing twelve-month (TTM) diluted EPS or free cash flow per share from the company's financial statements. If earnings have been distorted by a one-time event (asset sale, write-down, lawsuit settlement), use a normalized figure that removes the distortion.

Step 2: Estimate the Growth Rate

Conservatism matters here. Overestimating growth is the most common mistake in intrinsic value modeling. Use analyst consensus estimates for the next 2–3 years as a starting point, then consider the company's historical growth rate over 5–10 years, the industry's long-run growth rate, and whether the competitive position supports above-average returns.

Applying the same assumptions to cyclical and stable companies A steel company at peak earnings looks cheap by historical standards — because the earnings are temporarily elevated. Treating the output as a precise target rather than a range An intrinsic value calculator produces a model estimate — not a guaranteed outcome.
